I want to offer my congratulations to Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson on being elected leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party. It is clear they have a mandate to lead our Party. It is also great to hear that within 24 hours of the result 15,000 people joined the Labour Party as members. I hope we will able to use the energy and enthusiasm of our new members to engage communities across the country.
I also want to pay tribute to all the leadership candidates and in particular to Andy Burnham – a truly remarkable person who I was proud to support. I know he will continue to play a strong role in the Party.
It is now time for the Labour Party to unite and take on this Tory Government and hold them to account to the challenges facing the country. And just as importantly we must construct our Labour vision of a more equal and fairer society.
