Northern Hub Rail Investment

I am pleased that the Government has finally decided to revive the previous Labour Government’s plans to invest in the rail network and I welcome the announcement that the line between Manchester and Huddersfield is to be electrified and that they propose 6 fast trains every hour between Leeds and Manchester, as opposed to four previously.

These announcements are welcome as they will encourage economic growth and jobs in the region, although we need the building work to begin now, not in two years as the Government proposes.

While I welcome these aspects of the announcement, I have concerns that changes to trains departing from Manchester Piccadilly, rather than Victoria, could mean that constituents wishing to travel from Greenfield to Ashton under Lyne or Victoria will have to change.

I also have concerns that the increases in the number of fast and semi-fast trains could lead to a cut in the number of peak time services stopping at Greenfield. I have contacted Transport Secretary Justine Greening MP to confirm that the proposed changes will not have a detrimental impact on existing services.

Please note: These changes are due to be introduced between 2014-2019 and details may change before their introduction. Please check timetables before travelling at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
