Debbie Abrahams MP and Andy Burnham MP, Shadow Health Secretary for Health handing in Oldham's Drop the Bill petition to the Department of Health - 19/3/12

On 19 March Andy Burnham and I handed in a 475 signature Drop the Bill petition collected by Labour party supporters in Oldham over the weekend of 10th and 11th March.

Many thanks to Phil Gaul for setting up the stall and the rest of the team who helped me collect signatures for the petition. And a big thank you to the 475 people from across the constituency who added even more signatures to the tens of thousands already on the hugely successful e-petition to Drop the Bill which has been signed and supported by the likes of Stephen Fry, Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Oliver.

This government’s proposed Health and Social Care Bill affects us all across

Phil Gaul, Secretary of Alexandra Ward Labour Party, hands over the 475 signature Drop the Bill petition to Debbie Abrahams MP, outside her constituency office, collected by party members over the 10 and 11th March in Oldham

Oldham East and Saddleworth. The North West has lost 1,298 nurses since the general election and the government’s proposed Health and Social Care Bill will cost the north west alone £40M if it isn’t stopped from going through.

Phil Gaul, Secretary of Alexandra Ward Labour Party, said: “Nearly five hundred Oldham residents signed a petition calling upon the government to drop the Health and Social Care Bill. This shows the strength of feeling on this matter amongst Oldham residents who regard the NHS as an important organisation that should not be privatised.

“Even supporters of this government think they have gone too far.

“Our MP has been great in campaigning on this issue.”
