As the first MP to be trained as a Dementia Friends Champion, which enables me to host Dementia Friends workshops, it was lovely meeting everyone at Springlees and Dunsford Court and holding conversations about how to help friends and family who may experience dementia or be caring for someone with dementia.
After making developing a dementia friendly Oldham one of my priorities in 2011 it’s been fantastic to see all the organisations around Oldham and Saddleworth who have put in so much effort and enthusiasm into helping achieve this aim.
Housing and Care 21 Court Manager, Adele Jones, said: “All our staff have now taken part in Dementia Friends sessions but it was really useful to have a Dementia Friends session for our own residents and having our local MP host it was really special!
“All those who attended enjoyed the session and felt as though they now have a better understanding of dementia and how to help people who are diagnosed with it. In fact some of our residents have already been diagnosed so it’s really important for everyone here to be aware of how they can help make life easier for them and their carers.
“Our residents enjoyed the session so much they have decided to make our main charity event this year in aid of Dementia UK. So everyone is invited to pop in on 27th August between 1pm and 3pm for afternoon tea, raffles and other fun, all in aid of helping achieve Debbie’s aim to make Oldham the most dementia friendly town ever!”
