Oldham Post Office Closure

Debbie Abrahams' statement on the Oldham Post Office Closure

I am deeply disappointed by Post Office’s decision to close the main Crown Post Office in Oldham town centre and move part of this service to WH Smith at the Spindles Centre.

Fellow MP’s Jim McMahon, Angela Rayner and I objected strongly to the proposed closure previously. I remain unconvinced in both the sincerity of the intent and the result of the consultation which the Post Office are using to justify the move. The downgrading of services, the lack of concern for the ultimate diminishing of the terms and conditions of staff, and the reduced accessibility for people with mobility issues still raise considerable concerns. At its current Lord Street location, the post office remains an extremely well-used drop off and pick up point for bus travel users and those travelling in a car.

With the closure of banking services in Oldham, I am also concerned about the potential loss of a post office cash machine in a busy part of the town centre which sees constant footfall throughout the day.

As yet I have still to receive details of a comprehensive list of products and services provided at the new location which I have asked the Post Office to provide.

Oldham, like many other northern towns, has lost many local services as a result of the Government’s austerity measures and this is another example of further cuts with little concern about the effect on our communities and the people who use the service.
