Yesterday I popped along to collect the 38 degrees petition in Oldham town centre, signed by nearly 1,000 local people. I’d like to thank Daniel Thackeray and all the 38 degree volunteers for presenting me with their petition to save the NHS from the Tories and Lib Dems.
I am 100% behind them and, after yesterday’s revelations of 40% of NHS services being awarded to private healthcare companies and a 58% increase in private patients being treated in NHS hospitals since the Tory and Lib Dem’s 2012 Health and Social Care Act, the future of the NHS is a major issue for the people I’m talking to on the doorstep.
The Labour Party have a better plan for the NHS which will secure and transform it with £2.5bn a year invested from our fully costed Time to Care fund. This will be paid for from a Mansion Tax on properties over £2m, a levy on tobacco company profits and clamping down on tax avoidance and we will fund 8,000 more doctors, 20,000 more nurses and 5,000 more care workers.
We will put patients before profits and that’s something the Tories will never do.
We will repeal the Health & Social Care Act in the first Queen’s speech. And we will exempt the NHS from Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). And that’s just for starters! There’s much more to do to bring the NHS back to the point it was at, back in 2010, when the Tories and Lib Dems got hold of it!
